Invig Leads Eurostars project

NORWEGIAN TECHNOLOGY CONSORTIUM LAUNCHES EUROSTARS PROJECT TO REVOLUTIONIZE PALLET TRANSPORT

Invig AS leads international collaboration to develop SmartPallet - an innovative IoT solution that could reduce food waste and improve cold chain traceability

Invig AS has officially launched an ambitious Eurostars project to develop SmartPallet, a revolutionary IoT device designed to transform how we track and monitor goods during transport. The project is being conducted in partnership with Norwegian companies Smart Retur AS and Circmar AS, alongside Dutch partner Qados BV.

A pressing need in the cold chain

Globally, 1.3 billion tons of food are wasted annually, with approximately 10% of this waste occurring during transport in the value chain. Current tracking systems have significant limitations - GPS doesn't function inside containers and warehouses, and most solutions lack the flexibility that modern logistics requires.

An innovative solution

The SmartPallet system addresses these challenges through a unique combination of technologies. The innovative IoT device will be able to:

  • Monitor temperature and movement in real-time without relying on GPS signals

  • Function as a gateway for other sensors on the carrier or in containers

  • Offer on-demand services where pallet owners can activate temperature tracking or positioning when relevant

  • Deliver 15-year battery life through ultra-low power consumption

Strong partners with complementary expertise

The consortium brings together leading competence from multiple sectors:

  • Invig AS contributes deep expertise in RFID, IoT, and digital tracking systems

  • Smart Retur AS, the Nordic region's largest pallet provider, offers valuable insights into practical logistics challenges

  • Circmar AS brings knowledge from the seafood industry and reusable packaging

  • Qados BV delivers specialized competence in low-energy IoT hardware

Significant market potential

The global pallet market is valued at €65.8 billion, while the European cold chain packaging market alone represents €8.3 billion. The consortium expects to launch SmartPallet commercially by 2028, with potential revenues of €155 million over the first five years.

"We are proud to lead this groundbreaking project that can contribute to significantly reducing food waste," says Geir Vevle, CPO at Invig AS. "SmartPallet represents a technological breakthrough that will make cold chain logistics more efficient and sustainable."

Contributing to UN Sustainable Development Goals

The project directly supports the UN Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Goal 12.3 which calls for halving food waste by 2030. Through better temperature control and optimized transport routes, SmartPallet can contribute to both reduced food waste and lower CO2 emissions.

The project receives support through the Eurostars program and has a total budget framework of €1.52 million over a two-year period.
